Rank High for Your Keywords with Diverse Anchor Texts

In the world of search engine optimization, we all know the value of back-links, these can be better defined as votes of trust which point back to our website. There are several types of links and they are ranked differently by the search engines, a few are: one-way links, reciprocal links, three-way links, etc. The most important type of links are the one-way links since reciprocal links have somewhat lost their value due to the incredible link spamming which took place a few years ago.

The reason many reciprocal links lost value is because they were mostly placed in what were called "link pages", these pages contained huge numbers of links and many times they pointed to websites which were completely outside of the linking site's niche; in other words pharmacy websites were linking to real estate sites, sports sites were linking to technology sites and so on. As you can see, this linking structure offered no benefit for the visitor and was specifically designed to manipulate the search engines.

Google quickly adapted to these changes and reciprocals were downgraded, this gave one-way links more value as far as SEO. These type of links are hard to get since webmasters need to write about a specific source and quote it on their sites by providing a link to it, this represented a serious problem to webmasters who heavily relied on automated reciprocal link acquisition.

Link exchange networks which operate even at this point in time, made things easier for the search engines to detect the linking patterns and anchor text utilization, this last factor helped determine if the reciprocals were in fact spam or if they were good links. By using link networks to spam the search engines, site owners have only one way to specify anchor texts, meaning if the keyword they want to rank for is "search engine optimization" they would have to enter that term in the automated system and that would be the anchor texts linked to their sites from the thousand of sites participating in the network.

By running a simple back-link analysis on such sites it is easy to see that they have participated in networks designed to manipulate the search engine result pages since their main term comes up repeatedly hundreds of thousands of times. At this point you may be wondering "Well, how can we rank for a specific keyword without looking spammy?", the answer is simple, you can vary the anchor text, use juxtaposition or even make long tail phrases from them. For instance, if the term you are trying to rank for is "apple pie" you can use the following anchor text variations to rank for long tail keywords as well as for the main term: "delicious apple pies", "home made apple pies", "gourmet apple pies", "apple pie making secrets" and so on.

As you see the main keyword is mentioned in the anchor phrases but they are not redundant which works a lot better in terms of getting better rank and traffic from the search engines, especially from Google.

Web Directories - Finding Quality Web Directories

If you have already submitted to most web directories, you are not finished yet. Everyday there are at least 5 new web directories on the internet. Most likely if you submit to them and your site is accepted you wont get much of a benefit from them. But its possible later on that these directories will gain PR and will be worth more as a backlink. Just remember that every directory at some time was at PR0 and over time its likely that the quality will increase along with its backlinks.

There are a few reliable places that you can find new and reliable web directories to submit your site to. The first I will mention is directory critic. This site is decent and one of the more popular websites that list all sorts of directories, they also have a rating system that is based off other people's votes for a certain directory. Along with web directories you can also find article, deep link, paid and free directories listed by PR, date added or sort by DC's point system.

The second site I will mention is Digialpoint forums under the solicitations and announcements section. This particular forum is very popular and you will find many announcements about web directories in particular. Not only will you find new web directories but also limited time specials like a paid directory going free for a few days. This is a great oppurtunity to pick up a backlink in a paid directory without having to pay a dime. Besides the solicitations forum if you browse around the Directories forum you can also find some lists of directories that users have came up with.

The third community site is Vilesilencer. I like this particular site because they have a system that reviews directories regularly to ensure that only SEO friendly directories are in their list. When browsing web directories you might notice that some of them have an SEO friendly button on the directory, this is provided by Vilesilencer. They have a maximum of 500 web directories in their list at all times, so for this reason you will only find quality SEO friendly web directories. Along with this system you can find new directories being announced in their forums.

These are just a few ways to find new and quality web directories on the internet. There are some other popular forums that are also a great way to find them. V7N is one forum that I will mention that is popular with web directories. You can also find that they have an announcement forum for directory owners to announce their new web directories.

Optimizing Your Website’s On Page Content

Part of Search Engine Optimization is the on page factor of your website. In the long run off page SEO will have more of an effect. But it is best to make sure that your website is already optimized before you start with off page SEO.

One of the first factors that people think of when talking about on page SEO is the Meta tags. Yes meta tags can be somewhat important but they don’t carry as much as weight as they used to. The first thing you will look at is the title, this should consist of keywords that you are targeting and contain no more then 40 characters. The next tag will be the description tag. This is generally what will be seen when people are searching for your website, at the most I would make the description no more then 250 characters but only around 140 will show in the results in Google. The last tag is the keywords tag… this should include around 20 keywords at the most. Make sure that you place the most important keywords first and use variants of your targeted keywords.

If you already have started a website you should already know what keywords you want targeted. You should have a main keyword and two secondary keywords. Google supplies a good resource for keyword research just by using the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. You can even check out some of your competitor’s websites and Google will list the results of their keyword usage. This will give you an idea of what keywords are competitive and which are being searched for the most.

One of the factors that will affect your on page SEO the most is your content. Having keyword optimized and fresh new content will have a great effect on your SEO. When creating content for your site make sure that you are including your targeted keywords with no more then 8-10% density of your entire page. Another factor for your main keywords is using tags like H1, strong or underline on them. These will make your main keywords stand out to the Search Engine.

Some other small factors include using ALT tags on your images, for example if you have a recipe site and have a picture of a roasted chicken you can use an ALT tag that says “roasted chicken”. When doing this it will increase the text on your website by adding more keywords. Another small factor is making all the names of your public files relevant to what they are. For example instead of having an image named 242222.jpg you can rename it to roastedchicken.jpg. And you can do the same for your page files; make sure that they are named relevant to what the page is about.

Linking your site the correct way can also be important in on page SEO. One of the easiest ways to fix this is by creating a sitemap for your website. You can also upload your sitemap to Google Webmaster Tools, this way the spider will be able to get to every page of your site.

Get ranked higher in Google Search Engine Result Pages.

Today Google is one of the most used search engines for searches today, I will provide a list of thing that you can do to increase your site search results for a targeted keyword. Using these tips will not only increase your results with Google but will help with other Search Engines such as Yahoo & MSN.

Before you start to promote your site over the internet, it is best to first find out what search term or also known as “keyword” that you want to use to build your campaign. It should be a keyword that is related to your site and one that is actually being searched for. A great keyword research tool that you can use is Google Keyword Tool. Using this tool you can type in a keyword manually or let Google analyze your site by typing in your site address. It will return all the keywords that are found on your site and you can filter the results by search volume and competition.

Once you choose your keyword or keywords you will want to implement this in your site which is known as On-Page Optimization. Ensure that your keywords Meta tag reflect that your keywords are included; the keyword should be in your Title or at least a variation. Also in your site content it is best to have this keyword in your content in the right places but don’t keywords stuff your site where it may look unnatural. When a keyword accounts for 10% of the entire page content this is too much. When using keywords in your site, Search Engines will pick up if the keywords are in bold or italic.
There are more ways to optimize your on page content but there is too much to cover in this article. I started with the basics.

Now for Off-Page Optimization also known as link building, this is one of the most important factors when it comes to your site getting ranked in Google. There are many options when building links. Generally it is best to get your site listed on high page rank pages that are relevant to your site. But that is always not so easy to do. The first link building technique I will mention is Article Submissions. Article Marketing can greatly increase your Google search exposure. You can write an article about something that is related to your site’s content, and at the end of the article you can add 3 anchor texts and 3 hyperlinks that will point back to your site. You can then submit this article to article directories and when your site is accepted into the directory you will get back links from the hyperlinks in the article. When creating the anchor texts in the articles make sure you are using your targeted keywords that I mentioned earlier.

Another link building option is submitting your website to website directories or also known as search directories. There are many free ones out there that you can submit your site to. Just like the article submission, when your site is listed on a web directory you will get a backlink from the directory which passes “juice” onto your site. When creating the information to submit your website to directories the most important thing is choosing the right Anchor Text. Make sure when you create Anchor text you are again using your targeted keywords in it. Also make at least 5 variations of the anchor text. If Google sees your site was submitted to 500 directories all with the same anchor text this may be seen as duplicate content and then you most likely will not receive credit for the backlink.

These are just a few ways that you can increase your Google Search Engine Result Page’s. There are many other ways for link building and On-Page Optimization.

Building a Successful Web Directory

Building and maintaining a web directory can be a difficult task and time consuming. I will cover a few ways that you can optimize your directory and get the most out of your web directory. The promotion for a web directory has also changed now that Google has stopped paid links.

This article will be most useful for someone thinking about starting a web directory and has not yet established one. When starting a web directory you will first need to buy a domain, do some research for a domain. Generally its best to buy domains with the keyword in it, but seeing as there are so many domains already bought with the keyword directory in it, this may be hard. Its best to have an idea or template that you want to put up on your web directory before you even open it. It is well worth the money if you purchase a custom template for your directory.

Once you have a domain and a template you will need to figure out what type of directory it will be… the most popular directories now are probably PHP. They have some free versions of PHPlinkdirectory. Promotion is the key to your web directory, this will make a big difference. Start off submitting your directory to as many web directories that you can find to get more backlinks. You can even take it a step further and write some articles and submit them to article directories. Socializing on forums and submitting your site to Directory Critic will also result in a good amount of traffic.

Before Google penalized paid links, buying and selling links for directories were a popular way to promote your site, this can still be done on high PR directories but no-follow will be turned on and you will only receive traffic from this. Another good way to promote your directory is get a banner made and ask other directories if they will put up your banner on their site, but most likely you will have to pay a fee per month for this.

Running a web directory can be time consuming and frustrating because most people who run them will not see much income. Adsense isn’t a great way to make money with directories because most people that go to directories are only there to submit their website. One alternative to making money with your directory is by selling advertising space, for example this could be a banner or just simple text. But remember you have to put no-follow on or otherwise you will be penalized by Google if this is caught. In the early stages of your directory it will be very hard to make money, the best thing to do is avoid banners or ads for the first 4-6 months until you have made your directory a name in the community.

Once you get a PR3 or PR4 on your directory this is when you will most likely start to see some money being made, whether it is from featured links or selling banner space to other sites. You can set a per month fee for the banner space. Another advantage of having a web directory is utilizing the email templates that are sent out to users who submit their site to your directory. You can use the template to promote other sites you may have or even a friend’s site.

One of the biggest make and breaks for a directory is the way you edit the links that are submitted to your directory. This is very important that you must review every link that is submitted to the right category and use correct English and grammar in their titles and descriptions. It’s also a good idea to check the page that is being submitted to make sure it’s appropriate for your directory. This may be time consuming but it will ensure only quality sites will be listed in your directory.

List of Link building strategies

This will be my first post that actually isn't an article but just a list of ways you can promote your website through various sites and services.

#1 Directory submissions - There are many free web directories out there, why not take advantage and submit your site to them. Get a big list together and submit to 10-20 directories a day.

#2 Article Directories - Make a few articles or hire someone to write articles for you. At the end of the article include some links with anchor text. The same goes for this, get a list together of top PR article directories and submit your article to them or hire someone to do it.

#3 Forum posting/Community posting - There are so many forums out there you can post on, whether it be a forum that is related to your site or just a webmaster forum. Most will allow a signature link. Take advantage of this and put your links in your signature. You may also have the opportunity to mention your site if the post is relevant to doing so.

#4 Social Bookmarks & Communities - Sites like Digg and stumbleupon are very popular and only two of many high traffic social websites. Take advantage of these free services and submit your feeds/articles or websites to them. These generate backlinks and traffic to your site.

#5 Blogs/Blogging - Now days everyone and their grandma has a blog, so why not start your own? You can make a blog about something you enjoy and let the world know about it. At the same time you can post a link to your website or also talk about your site which will increase the traffic. Or leave comments on other blogs and post a link to your site, in result giving your site a backlink (as long as no follow is off).

#6 Link Exchange - This one can be a little more difficult to do. But if you know other webmasters who have sites similar to yours you can ask if they are interested in exchanging links with you. Both of you will benefit.

#7 Craigslist - One of the biggest online classified sites now days, you can be creative and post a classified and also post a link to your site from craigslist. If your classified is popular enough you can get some extra traffic, but don't rely on the backlink too much because most posts on there only last a limited time.

#8 Press Release - Getting a Press Release out can really get alot of exposure on some PR sites. And you may even have the chance to get your Press Release featured on a search engine like Yahoo or Google, which will greatly increase your traffic.

#9 Be Creative! - There are many other ways to increase your links and traffic from sites.. ill just mention a few Flick.com a PR9 site.. yes getting links from them are possible if you do some research.

What is next For Web Directories After the last Google Update?

Everyone that is familiar with utilizing Web Directories for link building or is an owner of a Web Directory knows that many directories were hit hard on the last Google PR update. I also know many blogs that were dropped out of the Google Index and lost PR due to selling links or purchasing them.

So what’s next? Well the only thing people can do that were affected from this is try to rebuild your site back to being an acceptable, rule abiding Directory or Blog. But its not selling or purchasing links alone, I know that some directories/blogs lost PR because they were linked with others that lost PR. I’m sure if you are an owner you know if you sold or purchased links. After you are sure you removed all paid links from your website you can then login to Google Webmaster Tools and click on the “Request Reconsideration”. But you have to be patient because this may take a few weeks.

I know that many Directory owners want to make an extra buck, so they try to sell space on their site for money. So what alternatives are there? Well if you’re a high volume targeted directory you could try adsense, but history shows I don’t know many Directories that have made much using adsense. This does not apply to blogs though, Blogging is much different then Web Directories. One thing you could consider is look around for affiliate advertisers that give you commission on selling their products by placing banners on your site. If you’re a niche directory it will be easier to find an affiliate. If you’re just a general Web Directory, promoting submission services, other web directories and hosting is probably the best category of affiliates to choose from.

The quality of Web Directories also need to improve, there are so many now that are being bought by one owner which is devaluing them. If one owner purchases 40 web directories they all will be on the same IP, thus you won’t receive much value from them. If you’re thinking of making a new Web Directory... it really is worth the money to purchase a Unique Template, and purchasing scripts and addons for your Directory. Patience is the key when being the owner of a Web Directory; it may take 6-12 months before you start to see a steady income.

I think now that Web Directory owners know how serious Google is about the purchasing and selling of links and the consequences we should see directory owners start to change the way their directories are maintained. And hopefully the next Google update we will start to see the PR and reputation of Web Directories start to climb again.
